This Living Earth family reside in a beautiful heritage – listed property in Melbourne’s east. Their existing garden was overgrown and outdated, and they needed guidance. After walking them through the design and consultation process, we decided on a softer, cottage – garden feel with plenty of movement, along with a cosy fireplace retreat in the backyard. Being on a corner block, it was important to ensure the garden flowed seamlessly. I designed a curving path with soft edges for the front, incorporating tall and medium – sized grasses, low – growing greys, and pops of purple throughout. Moving through the side yard, we created a wildlife haven and herb garden, leading to a secluded firepit area. Due to the backyard’s shade, we selected plants suited for dappled light. The back porch was also opened up to modernize the space and improve the flow. This design remains one of my favourites to this day.
